Kevin Murray, 61, dies

Bucyrus, OH — Longtime Massachusetts horseman Kevin D. Murray, 61, passed away peacefully on April 20 at his home in Carver, Mass., after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in 1961 in Ithaca, N.Y., he was the son of the late Daniel R. and Mona Loy (Nordling) Murray. The family relocated to Sharon, Mass., in the 1970s, where he graduated from Sharon High School in 1979. He was a foreign exchange student to Sweden and stayed an extra year before returning to Sharon. Once back home, he began to work horses with his family friends, the Herb Rosenblatt Stable, and raced at The Meadowlands.

Over the ensuing years, Mr. Murray worked for Hall of Famers Ray Remmen, Ted Wing, John Hogan and Jim Doherty, and campaigned at various tracks along the East Coast. Some of the better-known horses he worked with were Quick Trip 4,1:57.4h ($234,141) and Green With Envy p,5,1:53.4 ($474,868). He obtained his trainer’s license in 1988.

He relocated to work at Young Meadows Farm in South Hadley, Mass., where he met his wife of 31 years, Linda Popielarz, and together they became Team Murray. Mr. Murray was a trainer, owner and breeder, while Linda became one of the leading female amateur drivers in New England.

It was said that due, to his calm nerves and laid-back attitude, he was “perfect for young horses.” His quiet manners belied the fact that he was a high-rise window washer on Boston’s towering skyline.

Mr. Murray enjoyed fishing, cooking and gardening, and loved working at the farm at Sandbox Miniatures in Carver, Mass., where wife Linda, son Tyler, and daughter Sara put their talents towards developing world champion and Grand Classic-winning American Miniature Horses over the past 15 years.
