Kimelman and Verruso win MADC races at The Big M

East Rutherford, NJ – With just two MADC races carded Friday night (July 12) with one pace and one trot, the betting public was treated to ideal racing conditions and 14 races in total. Both events were exciting, well bet and had the publics’ top betting selections in both events not finishing first, technically.

The seventh race featured another week with several leavers from the start and a sub :27 first quarter-mile time (:26.4). With two horses sent off at identical 7-5 odds, it was Gazoo (Michael Kimelman) who quarter-moved to the lead over Machlicious (Tony Beltrami) and these two raced the rest of this way in the top spots.

They did finish that way, just over a length from each other, but longshot Sunshine’s Finest (William Clark Jr.) made his case via a tough first over journey for more than half a mile, to miss second by a nose at 73-1 odds.

The final time was posted in 1:52.1. The 5-year old gelding is trained by Kimelman along with co-owning him with his partners, Scott Kimelman and Sheila Baird, all out of NY.

In the 14th and final race of the night, it was a full field of 10 trotters going to post. Several horses left for the lead as the gate opened and, after an early miscue by Polo Bar (Tony Beltrami) in the first turn, it was the favorite Allindotime (John Calabrese) who released longshot My Big Kadillac (Mike Polansky) to the lead. They set sensible fractions (:28.4, :58.1 and 1:27.4) for the first three-quarters of a mile.

He led to field into the stretch but after drifting a bit off the rail, it was time for Fashion Cantab (Anthony Verruso) to pounce on the long-time leader and win by 2-1/4 lengths. Polansky was able to hold onto second over a hard charging Archibald (Peter Kleinhans), who rounded out a nice ($1) trifecta ($705.80).

The mile was trotted in 1:56.1, a new lifetime mark for Fashion Cantab. Symon Spicer trains the 5-year-old gelded son of the Cantab Hall for owner George Beck out of NJ.

The MADC will be back next Friday night (July 19) with the first post scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
