MADC in action Friday at The Meadowlands

East Rutherford, NJ — A little bit of weather didn’t bother those competing during Meadowlands Amateur Drivers Club action on Friday (June 3), with three races contested, one being a trot.

The first event featured only seven trotters going to post for the $12,500 purse. After some sorting out early, it was the post-time favorite, Cal Miles N Shell (John “Hockey” Calabrese), who scored the victory with the youngest horse in the field in the easiest of ways, winning by just over two lengths with plenty more in the tank. The mile went in 1:55.3. The early leader, Infinite Zetter (Newton “Yogi” Sheridan), held on for second while longshot, Ifnotmewho(Helene Engblom) rounded out the trifecta. The 3-year-old gelding is owned and trained by Calabrese, who resides in NJ.

Ten pacers went to post in the fifth race on the card, and when Jim King Solomon sent Bionic to the lead, he never had to look back. He was able to set some easy fractions in the first half of the mile. He was able to hold off all the challengers late to win by half of a length over the post-time favorite, Backstreet Lawyer (Tony Beltrami) and Moonwards Hanover(Joe Lee), who finished third.

The mile went in 1:54.4. The 5-year-old gelding is owned by Blazer One Racing out of NJ and is trained by Michael Shults.

The eighth and final MADC race featured ten pacers going to post and an early tussle for the lead into the first turn. Three horses left hard for the lead, and the fractions slowed after the two outside horses got to the top.

Ideal Suspect (Dominick Miga) held the lead for some time, but when the field turned for home, it was the pocket sitter, Rockabilly Charm (Tony Verruso), and the horse right behind him, A B Collins (Joe Lee) who made their moves and overtook the leader.

When the finish line came up, it was Lee who guided his pacer to victory over longshot Betabcool N (Dakota Jackson), while the tepid favorite, Snap Call (Matt Zuccarello), snuck up the cones to pick up the show dough. The mile went in 1:53.3. The 5-year-old gelding is owned and trained by Carl Tirella out of NY.

The MADC will return on Saturday (June 3), with two races slated on the Saturday night card. The first post is scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
