The 6-year-old Danish mare Mathilde Trojborg has had a jubilant season and on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 31) she won her 14th race from 17 starts in the prestigious Koster Memorial at Charlottenlund in Copenhagen.

Mathilde Trojborg, driven by her trainer, Flemming Jensen, won in a new track record of 1:54f, followed by the Swedish entry Columbian Necktie, driven by Ôrjan Kihlström.

Mathilde Trojborg picked up a check of $30,000 for the win, lifting her earnings this year to $200,000, which is a considerable sum in Denmark. She is sired by Earthquake, who has been at stud in Denmark since 1997. Her grandsire is Shane T Hanover.

Mathilde Trojborg has always been one of the best in her crop and won the Danish Derby for mares as a 4-year old. At that time she was trained by Knud Moenster.

As a 5-year-old she only raced four times, winning two races, and plans were to breed her, but last winter she was transferred to the stable of Flemming Jensen to give her a second chance to race.

And what a success it has been!

As mentioned earlier, Mathilde Trojborg has won 14 races this year and has trotted a new overall Danish record of 1:53.2f. She has won several races in the V75-races in Sweden and recently was an outstanding winner in France.

“We might have a shot at the Elitlopp next year,” Flemming Jensen said after the Koster win.

The Koster Memorial is raced in honor of Dutch born Niels Jan Koster, who for many years was the leading trainer in Denmark. He won the Dansk Trotting Derby an unheralded 10 times.
