Toronto, ON — Last year’s $297,000 Ontario Sires Stakes Super Final winner Prodigal Seelster is a few weeks away from qualifying, according to trainer David Menary.

The 3-year-old son of Camluck captured the $291,000 Battle of Waterloo last year along with a single OSS Gold final and an elimination of the Metro Stakes in 1:50. He ended his freshman campaign with $466,487 in earnings for Larry Menary, Denis Breton, Kenneth Ewen, and Double Or Nothing Stables, all from Ontario.

“He’ll be ready in a couple weeks,” Menary commented. “I’ll try and qualify him a few weeks before the Upper Canada Cup which gives us a little time in case there are any bumps along the road. Randy (Waples) was good enough to come in and train him and help out with the babies and he and Watermelonwine went in 2:01.”

Prodigal Seelster ended his 2-year-old season with six wins from ten starts. He was a C$60,000 purchase from the 2009 Forest City Yearling Sale, sold by Seelster Farms.

After being just a mere C$12,000 yearling purchase from the Canadian Open Yearling Sale in 2009, Watermelonwine certainly made his presence felt last year in the Ontario Sires Stakes program.

The son of Life Sign finished second in the $297,000 OSS Super final to stablemate Prodigal Seelster to end his freshman season with $172,632 in earnings.

Brad Gray of Dundas, Ontario owns the two-time winner from 12 starts who was raised and sold by Grace George of Cavan, Ontario.

In today’s interview with WEG’s media department, Menary talks about his hopes for a solid 2011 campaign from his two top 3-year-old pacers. He also offers his thoughts on this year’s 2-year-olds which trained this morning at Mohawk Racetrack.
