Miller, Callahan cap Philly triples with feature wins

Chester, PA — Drivers Marcus Miller and Corey Callahan notched their third wins of the afternoon when they drove Baldaquin and Caviart Emma, respectively, to victory in Thursday’s (Dec. 2) twin $15,300 trotting features at Harrah’s Philadelphia.

The faster of the two winners was Baldaquin, an Explosive Matter gelding who exploded out of the three-hole at the three-quarters, got the lead, then held onto a length margin over heavy favorite Ghostintheshell S, who overcame sluggish cover to still trot her last half in :55.2 to be close. Baldaquin may not race often – this was only the 23rd start in the 5-year-old’s career – but this was his 10th victory and boosted his lifetime earnings to $102,893 for Miller and trainer Louise Pepin, who shares ownership with Steven Bryden.

The Trixton mare Caviart Emma had some good fortune, getting to the pocket and then seeing the two favorites break, but she and Callahan made the most of their fortuitous situation with a 1-1/4-length victory over Boom Boom Bay in 1:56.3. Joe Poliseno conditions the winner for owner Ellie Sarama.

Austin Brubacker drove Gold Star Yoder to an off-the-pace victory in the final race for his first career driving win. Earlier, he had trained the victorious Storm Bringer.

Friday’s (Dec. 3) top purse event at Harrah’s Philadelphia, a $14,400 pace, is the very first race of the day, where Mad Man Hill and Almanac seem likely to be vying for the favorite’s role. Program pages for Friday’s card are available at the PHHA website.
