Nelson Remick Searway, 71, dies

Columbus, OH — Nelson Remick Searway, 71, died Sept. 28, 2011, after a long battle with cancer.

Mr. Searway was born Nov. 19, 1939, in Ashland, Maine. He graduated from Ashland High School and attended SMVTI where he majored in automotive repair.

He worked as an oiler, and from there he pursued his career with Ford dealers throughout Southern Maine. He went on to own and operate Searway Ford Sales in Sanford/Springvale, Maine.

Mr. Searway was an avid golfer and one of 13 owners of the Sanford Country Club. With his wife, Eleanor, he invested in real estate in South Portland, Maine.

During his retirement, his love of horses led him to own Searway Stables and race Standardbreds. Some of the notable horses he owned were Mordred, William And Harry, Bing N and Allamerican Wager. He loved watching his horses race at Scarborough Downs and the fairs. He could always be seen sitting on the apron at Scarborough in his big white truck.

He was very involved with the community, was a member of Sanford/Springvale Rotary Club and supported his children and grandchildren in their extracurricular activities.

Mr. Searway s survived by his wife of 50 years, Eleanor (Hall); brother, Albert (Bub); sisters, Marjorie Grey and Janis MacDonald; sons, Mark and Rick (Maureen); daughters, Laura, Julia Mullen and Sharon (Robert) Kirkpatrick; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ada;, brother, Hazen; sister, Barbara Sahlin; and grandson, Cody.

A service will be held at Hobbs Funeral Home, Cottage Rd, South Portland, on Tuesday, Oct. 4, at 11 a.m.
