Older Iowa horses take the stage at Eldon

Eldon, IA — The Wapello County Fair played host to two days of harness racing action. Though intermittent showers caused rain delays, a 10-race card kicked off the meet on Wednesday (June 12).

Pretty Boy Swag took an event for older Iowa-registered pacers, winning in 2:02.4 on a muddy track. With a three-race winning streak, this 5-year-old Marced Card gelding increased his lifetime earnings to $156,163 for owner, trainer and driver Duane Roland.

But the evening belonged to Texas-based trainer-driver Lorenza Gooch. After winning the first division of 2-year-old pacers with Waco Sassy Kid in 2:09.1, Gooch went on to win the last 2-year-old trotting division with Lo Can Gogogo in 2:21, as well as the Free-For-All with Helena’s Hope, who paced to the winner’s circle in 2:09.2.

Day two of the Eldon doubleheader went to post on Thursday (June 13), with seven races on the card. Older Iowa-registered trotters started off the afternoon, with Duane Roland teaming with Awesomely Awesome. After finishing second last week, the 7-year-old mare by Weight Lifter increased her lifetime record to 38 wins with a 2:05.3 score.

The second race belonged to Loussolataire. The 3-year-old trotting filly by Lou’s Legacy left the gate and didn’t look back. After cutting fractions of 31.3, 1:02.4 and 1:33.3, she trotted to victory in 2:05.4. Owned, trained and driven by Steven Renard, this filly looks to continue her winning ways as a sophomore.

Dan Roland found the winner’s circle twice as owner, trainer and driver. Make Me Purr, a 3-year-old filly by Celebrity Maserati won race four in 2:13.1. Justa Prancin finished second, with the fillies beating the colts in this 3-year-old mixed trotting event.

Itsonlymoneyhoney rounded out the card, holding off Max Trax Go N Spi to win race seven. Roland drove the 2-year-old Banker Volo colt to his first lifetime win in 2:13.

Racing action continues on Saturday (June 15) with a 15-race Sire Stakes card at What Cheer and $72,000 in purses on the line.
