Saratoga Springs, NY–The Saratoga Harness Horseperson’s Association is currently accepting applications for the position of outrider/marshal to assist with our racing program for the upcoming 2022 season.

Job Overview

The position covers each race day beginning approximately one half hour before the first post time until the conclusion of the final race that day for our anticipated 150-day 2022 racing schedule with responsibilities including:

Helping to ensure the safety of all racing participants (both human and equine).

Patrolling the racetrack during racing hours for debris and foreign objects.

Leading the post parade before each race.

Helping to turn horses to the gate or assist drivers with difficult horses when necessary.

Assisting with the gathering of any loose horses on the track.

Minimum Requirements

There are no formal education requirements, candidates must be at least 18 years old.

You must provide your tack and safety equipment as well as your own horse including transportation to and from the track if not stabled on the grounds. On site stabling options will be considered if necessary and acceptable by the applicant.

Prior riding and horse handling experience will be factored into the candidate selection.

Candidate must have a flexible schedule as race card dates/times are subject to change throughout the year. The position may require multiple people to cover the 150 dates so candidate must be willing to coordinate scheduling with others.

Compensation Level

Compensation will be based on experience and related potential need to cover horse stabling costs with a rate of $200 per race card ($30,000 per season) initially anticipated.
