Berlin, MD — Ocean Downs hosted four $25,000 Maryland Sire Stakes finals for 2-year-olds on Wednesday (July 27).
The night began with a non-wagering event for filly trotters. Tejano Chick (Tejano-Yankee Preview) pulled a big upset over Mrs Weasley after the favorite made a break leaving the gate. Tejano Chick was driven by Nick Coblentz for owners Christopher and Nicholas Coblentz and scored in a time of 2:12.4.
Also off the card was the colt/gelding pace. Driver Corey Callahan sent In Front Charlie (Up Front Charlie-Mark’s Courtesy) to the front and never looked back, setting a new Maryland Sires Stakes record at Ocean Downs for gelding pacers in 1:57.3. In Front Charlie is owned by Dr. William J. Solomon.
GooGoo GaaGaa (Cam’s Rocket-Kora’s Trotter) extended his win streak to three by taking the colt/gelding trot by 20 lengths, setting a MDSS and track record for colt trotters of 2:00.1. This was also the fastest mile by any 2-year-old trotter at Ocean Downs. Jim Morand was the pilot for owner and trainer Richard Hans.
The filly pacers went to post in the eighth race of the night, with Brite Jet and Rockin Roxanne renewing their rivalry. Once again Brite Jet (Jet Pace-Brite Outlook) prevailed, extending her winning streak to three, with the time for the mile at 1:59.3. Ross Wolfenden has driven Brite Jet in all of her starts for owners James and Carol Atkinson.
