Pennsylvania sires residency clarification reminder

by Jerry Connors, for the Pennsylvania Harness Racing Commission

Harrisburg, PA — In response to a number of inquiries for clarification, the Pennsylvania Sire Stakes and Pennsylvania Standardbred Breeders Development Fund state that the minimum period a stallion has to stand in Pennsylvania to become a registered sire, with offspring eligible for the two Pennsylvania breed-incentive programs, is February 15 until July 4.

The stallion must be in the state during this period, but if a year-round resident, or coming early or staying late, offspring resulting from breeding processes outside that date range will still be eligible for Pennsylvania registration. (The foals of “dual-hemisphere” stallions must, of course, result from the breeding process conducted within the Commonwealth’s boundaries.)
