Perrin wins 11 at Minnesota Fair

by John Pawlak, the U.S. Trotting Association

Columbus, OH –— J.D. Perrin had a great day at the St. Peter, Minn. fair on Wednesday, August 11, and it had nothing to do with riding the rides or eating all the Elephant Ears he wanted.

Perrin, in making 13 starts on a 17-race card, posted 11 victories, which matched a North American, non-pari-mutuel record.

In fact, the 25-year-old Perrin, who has been driving and training since 2001, earned more than one-third of his 2010 victory total of 31 on the Wednesday card. He is a sixth-generation horseman who traces his lineage back to his great-grandfather, Lloyd Perrin, a mainstay at the Wisconsin fairs in the 1940s and he is the grandson of the Illinois Hall of Famer Dorman Perrin.

Among Perrin’s victories were both divisions of the Free For All, the Minnesota-Bred Class A event and two races restricted to 2-year-olds.

Perrin’s quickest triumph was with Onceinabluemoon, winning the Minnesota Class A pace in 2:02 over Prince Aidid (Will Roland) and Mint Paddy (John DeLong). The Ohio native’s Free For All tallies came behind Diamond Toy who bested Mellow Road (Rick Magee) and Arizona Gabe (DeLong) in 2:03 and JD’s Personalstatis who held off Tootin Hanny (Magee) and El Gees Foggyflyte (Jenni King) in 2:02.2.

The 2-year-old winners under Perrin’s guidance were Wisconsin Place in 2:08 and Sargent D in an impressive 2:05 mile.

His other winner’s circle visits were with Andy Lane River, Heytherepertylady, I’m Spartacus, Shadowontheground, Lou Doo and Daddy Don’t Care.

Perrin currently ranks tied for ninth in the Running Aces Harness Park dash standings with 18 wins in 42 nights. Dean Magee is the runaway leader with 54 triumphs, followed by Tim Maier with 28, Rick Magee with 27, John DeLong with 24, Nick Roland with 23, Tom T. Tetrick with 20, and Dan Maier and Joey Mapes with 19.

Perrin matched the 11 wins recorded on a single fair card set by Roger Hammer at York, Pa. on Sept. 9, 2003, but fell two wins short of the single-card record, regardless of location, which is 13, posted by Bruce Ranger at Pompano Park on Sept. 5 of last year.
