Phoenix Rising scores eighth win in 2023 with Maryland Standardbred score

Berlin. MD — Ocean Downs hosted two splits of the Maryland Standardbred Fund Stakes for 3-year-old filly pacers and a lone division for 3-year-old trotting colts and geldings on Monday night (Aug. 7).

The first $26,950 split for the sophomore filly pacers went to the post as race two. Lloyds Loves (Rusty’s All In) with Trae Porter between the wheels was content with a three hole trip behind the two favorites until the three-quarter pole when Porter tipped out and blew by Beantown Babe and Morgans All In, registering a 2-1/2 length victory in the 1:56.4 mile. John Wagner trains for owner–breeder Pam Wagner.

The third race featured the $49,100 Fund stake for the sophomore trotting colts and geldings. Reinsman Jonathan Roberts sent favorite Tenouttaten (Cam’s Rocket) wire-to-wire, winning by a neck over longshot Now More Than Ever (Cam’s Rocket) in 2:01.3. Kerry Welty is the trainer-owner-breeder of Tenouttaten.

The rivalry between Phoenix Rising (Movie Idol) and Val’s Girl (Rusty’s For Real) played out once again in the fifth race, the second division for the filly pacers with a purse of $26,950. Pilot Frank Milby gave Phoenix Rising the perfect pocket trip, slipping past the front running Val’s Girl at the wire, stopping the clock in 1:55.4. Franklin Gannon III trains and co-owns the winner with Elizabeth Gannon. The breeders are Frank Gannon Jr., Joan Gannon and Frank Gannon III.

Maryland Standardbred Fund Stakes for sophomores finish up on Wednesday (Aug. 9) with the trotting fillies and pacing colts.
