by Dean A. Hoffman, for Scioto Downs

Columbus, OH — Polo Johnny broke his maiden on Thursday night (May 15) at Scioto Downs with a four length win in 1:56.1. His victory for driver Sam “Chip” Noble and owner Jerry Kutschbach came in the first of two divisions of the Steamin Demon, a series honoring a double-gaited star from the 1950s.

The other division of the Steamin Demon went to Firms Randsome in 1:59.4 after cold rains hit the area. Kyle Ater drove the favorite to a come-from-behind victory for his father Dan Ater, who owns and trains the pacer.

Scioto Downs also on Thursday hosted three divisions of the Killbuck Mary to honor a talented trotting mare from the 1970s.

Ms Pollyanna, fresh off a win in the Ohio Sires Stakes at Lebanon, took the fastest division in 2:01.2, going wire-to-wire for owner J.D. Burnett, trainer Dan Ater and driver Kyle Ater.

The other winners were Mz Friendly in 2:01.3 and Hey No Annie in 2:02.
