‘Summer’ comes early at Dover Downs

Dover, DE — Summer Camp won an electrifying head-to-head duel with Schoolkids to win the $35,000 Preferred Open Pace at Dover Downs on Monday (Feb. 28).

Summer Camp was a neck winner over Schoolkids in a time of 1:50.3.

Andy Miller, driving Summer Camp, attacked pacesetting Schoolkids (Pat Berry) on the backstretch but could not get past the leader heading to the far turn or through most of a stretch-long duel until the final strides when the 4-year-old Rocknroll Hanover-Roman Art gelding ground down last week’s winner in a 1:50.3 photo finish mile.

Baron Racing and VIP Internet Stable shared winning owner’s laurels. Meet leader Josh Green conditions Summer Camp, a winner of five of his eight starts this year and $74,180 in earnings in 2011. Harlingen Hanover, the only starter not to have won at least one of this meet’s feature events, finished third for trainer-driver Roger Plante.

Tim Tetrick and Astounding Hanover have a good thing going. Tetrick has driven the Allamerican Native-Aw Shucks Hanover gelding for three wins in his last five starts for owners Jim King and Joe Johnson. This time Astounding Hanover rolled along the passing lane to catch front-pacing Nova Artist (Allan Davis) at the wire for a 1:52.3 victory in the $32,500 Delaware Special. Funny Deacon (Corey Callahan) got up for third.

Tim Tetrick, after a nine-win performance Sunday, added both ends of the daily double to his five straight wins in the closing five races on Sunday to complete his meet record streak of seven consecutive wins over two separate cards. Tetrick won four races in all on Monday.

Josh Green trained three winners and VIP Internet Stable had two ownership wins.

The Meadows
Handsome Prince enjoyed a cozy pocket trip behind Object Of Art, then brushed by him in the lane to score a convincing victory in Monday’s $22,500 Winners Over $10,000 Life/Preferred Handicap Pace at The Meadows. Dave Palone gunned Handsome Prince to the front but willingly yielded to Object Of Art, who was strong enough to thwart the early challengers. But Handsome Prince, the 1-5 favorite as part of a Ron Burke-trained entry, pulled the pocket into the final turn and easily outkicked Object Of Art to the wire, downing him by 3-1/4 lengths in 1:53.1 over a “sloppy” track. Jonesie Hanover was well back in third. Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Bruscemi LLC and M1 Stable own Handsome Prince, a 6-year-old Grinfromeartoear-Nova Princess gelding who now boasts $291,704 in career earnings. Palone drove six winners — five for Burke — on the 15-race card.
