Wind Surfer moves early and late, wins Meadows’ $22,500 trot

Washington, PAOvercoming a bad draw, Wind Surfer used speed early and the Lightning Lane late to capture Monday’s $22,500 Preferred Trot at The Meadows.

Leaving from post eight, Wind Surfer hustled to the front for Eric Ledford and was pocketed by the quarter-pole move of Rembrandt Spur. Wind Surfer charged by Rembrandt Spur in the stretch and defeated him by a length in 1:54.3. Y-Dat raced well first over for third.

Kent Sherman trains Wind Surfer, a 6-year-old Muscles Yankee-Windsurfing VC gelding who now boasts $527,275 in lifetime earnings, for James Koran and Betty Sherman.

Elsewhere on the card, Darena Hanover became harness racing’s fastest 2-year-old filly pacer on a five-eighths-mile track this year when she won a maiden race in 1:56.1 in her career debut. Dave Palone drove the daughter of Yankee Cruiser-Dashaway Hanover for trainer Ron Burke and Burke Racing Stable.

Palone drove four winners and Ledford three on the 14-race program.

Harrington Raceway
Andrea Hill’s Jeremy’s Successor ($7.20, Sean Bier) earned his fifth Harrington Raceway win in 2011 on Monday with a 1:53.1 score in the featured $18,600 Open Pace. Trained by Crissy Crissman, the 7-year-old Mach Three gelding sat behind pacesetter Harlingen Hanover throughout and surged up the inside late for the win. Harlingen Hanover held second while a game Chilli NZ survived a first over trip for third. Jeremy’s Successor has banked more than $130,000 this year and has won five of his eight races on Delaware’s half-mile racetrack. Veteran pacer Village Blitz earned his 58th career win in the third race for owner/trainer Arty Foster, Jr. Driven by Russell Foster, the 11-year-old Village Jiffy gelding won his third straight race in 1:54.1 and is closing in on $840,000 in career earnings. Harrington’s leading driver Ross Wolfenden had five winners on the card.

Pompano Park
A humid evening with the temperature well into the 80s was much to the liking of I’m Just Special as she reeled off a 1:50.3 life’s mark in the $14,000 fillies and mares Monday evening pacing feature.
Jason Dillander made his weekly trek back from Hoosier Park to team the 6-year-old daughter of Camluck-Ladys Special Girl through fractions of :27.1, :55.3 and 1:23.2 on the way to the career best mile. Pete Pellegrino trains the graduate of the Ontario Sires Stakes Gold Series for Susan and Ted Colby. Her career bankroll now stands at $637,093 following her 29th career win. Glam Cam made a strong final half brush with Wally Hennessey in the bike for the place position and Nillabomb in rein to Dan Clements was third.

Monticello Raceway
Jimmy Marohn, Jr. reined three winners on the Monticello Raceway card including a 1:55.4 effort with Notimefordreaming. Not only was that the ninth victory of the season for the 6-year-old daughter of Dream Away but it was a new lifetime mark and nearly two seconds better than her previous best win time.
In their contest Notimefordreaming got a perfect steer from Marohn as the diminutive driver sat chilly behind the fast fractions set by the pacesetter Winsmith Jen, who was driven by Jimmy Taggart, Jr. Now with nine wins, three seconds and five thirds in 19 starts, Notimefordreaming has been a model of consistency. The pacing mare is trained by Frank Yanoti and owned by the Skull N Roses Stable. She paid $8.50 for win. Marohn also reined Kim Crawford N to a 1:59.1 victory for the pacer’s fifth of the year and scored a 1:57.4 triumph behind Lady O’Grady which was the veteran pacing mare’s first seasonal victory. With his hat trick on June 27, Marohn now has reined 111 winners at the Mighty M which places him fourth on the local leaderboard behind Zeke Parker’s 190, Bruce Aldrich, Jr.’s 156 and Jimmy Taggart, Jr.’s 122.
