Redemption for Scirocco Rob at Dover

Dover, DE — After being disqualified due to a break in stride last week, Scirocco Rob thundered home from off the pace to win Tuesday’s (March 30) $20,000 Open Handicap Trot at Dover Downs in 1:51.3.

JL Cruze, the 8-5 favorite, left sharply, along with Jack Vernon and Pat Matters. As the dust cleared going to a :27 quarter, JL Cruze yielded the lead to Pat Matters, who maintained an uncontested lead through the half in :55.1. Past the half, Northern Express moved first-over in pursuit of Pat Matters, towing Scirocco Rob and driver Tim Tetrick into perfect position to pounce.

Pat Matters reached three-quarters in 1:23.1 and seemingly started to draw off as JL Cruze began to tire from the pocket. However, Northern Express and Scirocco Rob both gobbled up ground steadily turning for home. In deep stretch, Scirocco Rob surged to the lead, winning by three-quarters of a length. Northern Express (Russell Foster) finished second; Pat Matters (Andy McCarthy) finished third.

Scirocco Rob, a 6-year-old gelded son of Explosive Matter, is trained by Mark Silva for owners Lewis and Kathleen Whitaker. He paid $6.60 to win.

Tim Tetrick won four races on the card; Pat Berry won three.

Racing at Dover Downs continues on Wednesday (March 31). Post time is 4:30 p.m.
