Columbus, OH — Richard O’Donnell, 87, longtime State Steward at Freehold Raceway, died May 7, 2025.
Born in 1937 in Cleveland, Ohio, he received a BA in General Business from Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1964 attended the very first USTA Officials School.
Starting in 1965, he was employed in the Racing Office and/or Judges Stand at Northfield Park, Suffolk Downs, Buffalo Raceway, Pompano Park, and Atlantic City Raceway.
Mr. O’Donnell made a slight deviation from his chosen path in 1972, working as Divisional Manager for Umbaugh Builders Race Track Division helping to build the new clubhouse at Buffalo Raceway.
He returned to racing the following year, and held the position of Racing Secretary at Yonkers Raceway, Freehold Raceway, Laurel Raceway, Painesville at Northfield, Ocean Downs, and Freestate Raceway during the 1970s.
In 1980, he became State Steward at Freehold Raceway and held that position until his retirement.
Working for the State of New Jersey, he also held similar positions at The Meadowlands and Garden State Park during his almost 60 year career.
Mr. O’Donnell was a member of the American Harness Racing Secretaries, Inc. since 1974 and the Racing Officials Accreditation Program (ROAP) as a Senior Accredited Steward.
A longtime resident of Manasquan, N.J., he kept in touch with his good friend, Karen Fagliarone, even after his retirement in 2023.
A funeral service will be held in June.
