Robert Mitchell of Smyrna DE formerly of Goldsboro MD, passed away on October 15, 2024, surrounded by his family.

He was born on August 22, 1934, in Goldsboro, MD, to the late William McMullen and Letitia Mitchell.
Robert received his education locally in Henderson, MD. Throughout his life, he pursued various careers, including working for Playtex and being a self-employed roofer; however, most of his professional journey revolved around training and owning Standardbred horses. He retired from Standardbred Harness Racing in 2013. Robert was affiliated with numerous organizations, such as USTA, DSOA, Cloverleaf, and AARP.
He had a deep passion for country two-step dancing, roofing, and cart racing. Robert also cherished a few favorite horses, including Second Mate and Ziggy Stardust.
Robert was preceded in death by two sisters Eleanor and Dorothy, three brothers Rodney, Wilmer and William Mitchell, two half-brothers Paul and Sonny Mac McMullen.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Pat Mitchell, as well as his brother Vernon Mitchell (Patricia) from Sudlersville, MD, and his sister Rosetta Mitchell from Smyrna, DE. He also leaves two stepdaughters, Tammy Taylor (William) of Ridgely and Betty Lou Steele of Denton. Robert’s legacy lives on through six grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends.
Robert will be deeply missed by everyone. We would like to express our gratitude to his devoted caregivers, including his wife Pat, Deanna, and the entire staff at Accent Care Hospice, and Stephanie from ACMD.
The family warmly invites you to join them for a visitation from 12 PM to 2 PM at Fleegle and Helfenbein Funeral Home, followed by a service at 2 PM.
