Rookies contest Simpson at Harrah’s Philadelphia

Chester, PA — Rookie colts and geldings took center stage in Friday afternoon’s (Oct. 23) John Simpson Memorial action at Harrah’s Philadelphia, contesting two divisions of the $111,600 Super Bowl for trotters and three splits of the $110,000 Bret Hanover for pacers.

Odds-on favorites took both Super Bowl splits. The Cantab Hall-Jolie De Vie gelding Jack Fire won the first, making the lead off the first turn and going on to win in a new mark of 1:56. The Pennsylvania Sire Stakes consolation winner defeated the Fair Sire Stakes champion Top Me Off by three-quarters of a length for his fifth win in 10 starts. David Miller drove for trainer Nifty Norman and the partnership of Pinske Stables and Curly Tall Curly Small.

In the second trot, Marcus Miller moved Sunny Crockett to the top, and the pair withstood pocket rival Flemsteen by three-quarters of a length in 1:56.2. The Julie Miller trainee, a son of Father Patrick and Moonlight In Miami, now has six wins in 11 trips to the gate for Willow Oak Ranch and Andy Miller Stable Inc.

Marcus Miller also won a division of the Bret Hanover, teaming Whichwaytothebeach to a stakes-fastest 1:51.2 mile. The Somebeachsomewhere-Swinging Beauty gelding got command at the quarter and stayed strong to the finish, posting a :54.4 back half to repel Bettor Of The West. Whichwaytothebeach is now four for eight for trainer Roland Mallar and owners Alan Johnston and John Craig.

His Beats Hanover continued his development for trainer Tom and owner John Cancelliere by breaking his maiden in 1:53. The Somebeachsomewhere gelding raced from the pocket for George Napolitano Jr. and went by favorite Cyrus Peak to win by a half length.

The Captaintreacherous-Fancy Filly colt Captain Fancy posted his third straight victory despite having to pace his last half uncovered in :55, drawing off to a 2-1/2 length victory over Mysweetboymax in a new mark of 1:52.2. Daniel Dubé drove for trainer Bill MacKenzie and owners Vincent Ali Jr., Alma Iafelice and Ted Gewertz.
