Rose Run Ulysses, Later Dudes dead heat in Scioto Downs feature

Columbus, OH — Rose Run Ulysses (Kayne Kauffman) and Later Dudes (Tony Hall) crossed the wire together for a dead heat victory in Saturday’s (June 18) featured $30,000 Open Pace at Eldorado Scioto Downs.

Later Dudes took the early lead with Rose Run Ulysses settling on his back in second. The pair were unchallenged through the three-quarter pole, setting fractions in :26.3, :54 and 1:22.1. The Lightning Lane opened for Rose Run Ulysses and the battle began. Both geldings tripped the wire together in 1:50.3. Rose Run Ulysses paid $9.40 to win while Later Dudes returned $3.80. Gd Western Joe finished third.

Rose Run Ulysses equaled his lifetime mark with the dead heat victory. A seasoned warhorse at six, he has 22 starts this year with four wins, six seconds, and a third. Rose Run Ulysses now boasts more than $350,000 in career earnings. Kim Dailey owns and trains the chestnut Western Vintage gelding known as “Big Red.”

A product of the Burke Brigade, Later Dudes had expectations after last week’s conditioned win in 1:49.3. This is shaping up to be the year for the 5-year-old gelding by Sweet Lou. With 20 seasonal starts under his belt, he has scored eight victories and bankrolled $80,888. Later Dudes is owned in partnership by Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi.

The Burke Brigade also captured the $23,000 Open II Pace with Buy In (Josh Sutton). The son of Western Ideal went off at 8-1. After getting away in the middle of the pack, Buy In made a final surge up the stretch to reach the finish in 1:50.4. Hardt At Work was second while Modern Rock As completed the trifecta.
