Southwind Amazon captures $14,000 Michigan Mini Series

Northville, MI — Southwind Amazon ($3.80) captured the featured $14,000 Michigan Mini Series for the second week in a row and notched career win 119 in his 304th career start.

It was not the easiest of journeys for Southwind Amazon and driver Art McIlmurray. Starting from post eight, McIlmurray left for position, getting away fifth behind early leader Princess Rockette (Justin Irvine) who tripped the beam to the opening quarter in :27.1.

McIlmurray pulled the right line and guided Southwind Amazon outside to the first-over position. Lying In Cash (Jason Merriman) looked on from the pocket.

As in previous weeks. Princess Rockette and Southwind Amazon battled, only this time it was for the entire mile. The half-mile was timed in :55.4 with the three-quarters popping on the timer in 1:24.

As they came into the stretch, Southwind Amazon dug deep for more as Lying In Cash dove into the super stretch for the drive. Southwind Amazon held off the late surge by a half-length over Lying In Cash with Princess Rockette settling for third. The timer was stopped in 1:53.3.

Ameer Najor owns and Paul Holzman trains Southwind Amazon whose career earnings now total $1,333,721.

Driver/trainer Ryan Ver Hage also had a big night, capturing a triple with driving and training wins in races one, two and 10.

Northville Downs resumes live racing next weekend, closing weekend, June 24 and 25, with first race post time scheduled for 7:30 p.m. each night. After next weekend, racing resumes Sept. 9 for the Fall meet.
