Scarborough Downs will open its 2012 harness racing meet this weekend.

“The entry box was overflowing this week so the fields are full this weekend and the quality of the card is evident,” said Scarborough Downs Publicity Director Mike Sweeney. “The mild winter and ideal track conditions have allowed the local horsemen to have their steeds in tip top condition so we expect the caliber of races to approach mid-season form.”

State of Maine native Chris Long will return home this weekend from his regular base at Saratoga Raceway. His presence compliments an already-strong colony of drivers headed by Drew Campbell, the Kevin Switzers (both Jr. and Sr.), Ron Cushing, Shawn Thayer and Steve Nason. Combine these drivers with the strong cards of races and the fans will have their work cut out for them handicapping winners.

Additionally, opening day (Saturday) will feature a Lucky Losers drawing after race eight, where patrons can drop any losing ticket into a bucket for drawings for Red Sox tickets, gas card, gift certificates and credit vouchers.

The track is pleased to promote exciting events all season, including The Kentucky Derby, which falls on May 5 this year, and is the Downs’ biggest event of the year. The Downs Club will be open for all Triple Crown events and will feature delicious buffet dining catered through the new partnership with CVC Catering Group of South Portland.

This is also the fifth season that Downs’ fans will enjoy free admission.

Weather conditions promise to be seasonable for the weekend, with temps in the high 40s, so fans can get outside and watch the horses up close.
