Scirocco Donnahill, Sugar Factory impress at Pocono

from the PHHA/Pocono

Wilkes-Barre, PA — Driver Corey Callahan guided the swiftest winner on both the trot and the pace during a morning session for 2-year-olds at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono on Wednesday (June 13).

The filly Scirocco Donnahill became the first 2:00 trotter on a five-eighths-mile track (as reported at press time) when she won in 1:59.2, setting all the pace and then tacking on a :29 last quarter. The John Butenschoen trainee is a daughter of Muscle Hill out of the Donato Hanover mare UF Tadys Donato, who is a half-sister to $1 million winner Hez Striking.

On the pace, Sugar Factory also made every pole a winning one, hitting the half in :59.4 then scooting home in :55.2 to complete the 1:55.1 package, two-fifths off the season’s record for juvenile colts on a five-eighths-mile track. Tom Cancelliere trains the son of Sweet Lou-Cam Swifty, she a 1:50 pacer and million-dollar winner during her racetrack career.

The Erv Miller stable had a particularly successful day in sending out four winners, with his son Marcus handling all four before shuffling off to Buffalo with a total of 2,999 lifetime victories.

Other stables who had multiple winners were those of John Butenschoen and Jake Leamon, each of whom had a pair.
