Monticello, NY — McKenzie Sowers rallied Muscle Detector from near last to land a 23-1 upset in the $7,500 North American Amateur Drivers Association (NAADA) Trot at Monticello Raceway on Wednesday (Oct. 15).
Leaving from the pylon post, Sowers settled Muscle Detector in fifth as Kameran Hanover (driven by Joe Lee) forged to the lead through a :28 first quarter. Kameran Hanover then endured first-over pressure from Draco S (Anthony Verruso) to a :58.2 half before that rival tired up the backstretch, leaving Kameran Hanover to coast to three-quarters in 1:29.1. Sowers meanwhile gathered momentum with Muscle Detector and angled off the pylons for a three-wide assault in the final turn. Muscle Detector soared over the top in the lane to register a 1-3/4-length win with 7-5 favorite Doo Wop Kid (Alan Schwartz) grabbing second off a pocket trip. Kameran Hanover settled for third and Woodside Genius (Bob Krivelin) took fourth.
Raheim Strong trains Muscle Detector, a 4-year-old gelding by Alarm Detector, for owner Scott Keppler. He paid $49.94 to win.
NAADA action shifts back to Yonkers Raceway next Thursday (Oct. 23) for the seventh preliminary of the club’s fall series. First-race post time at Yonkers is 6:45 p.m. (EDT).
