Columbus, OH — Tommy “Thomas” Lail, 86, of Mickleton, N.J., died Oct. 28, 2019, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Dec. 27, 1932, raised in Troutman, N.C., and spent all of his adult life in the horse racing business.
Mr. Lail was a longtime member of the USTA whose horse racing career began in South Jersey in the 1950s. He owned a farm in Mickleton, N.J. where he bred and trained horses. His first horse was Mark Greentree and some of the top performers he had were Andy Lobell, Andy’s Trotter, Noble Tryst, Kenwood Hampton and It’s Coast Time.
He will forever be remembered by his beloved wife of 58 years, Doris (nee Armbruster); children, Tom and Linda Mowbray, Diane (Lail) and Tom Contarino, Mark and Karin, Troy and Sharon, and Joel and Patti, all of the “Lail Compound” in Mickleton; grandchildren, Thomas, Michael, Lindsay, Kristina, Christopher, Jessica, Gabrielle, Ashlee, Troy, Megan and Erin; brother, Bobby; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday (Nov. 2) at St. Stephen’s Lutheran Church, 230 N. Evergreen Ave., Woodbury. Relatives and friends may visit with the family Saturday morning in the church beginning at 8:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will be at Eglington Cemetery, Clarksboro.
