Trio of MADC races at The Big M

East Rutherford, NJ — The MADC put on three races with exciting finishes on Friday (June 7) at The Meadowlands and the betting public’s choice only won one of those events.

The first race had a blazing speed duel for the first half-mile which included this week’s combatants of Michael Shults aboard Just A Rocket Man, and longshot David Glasser, driving Sand Sniper. These two dueled for over a half-mile and into defeat, as it set the race up for the closers.

A well timed and patient move by the favorite, Yer So Bad (William Harrison), subbing in for his normal reinsman, Tony Verruso, was able to pick up the victory by a neck over longshot Terre Haute (Newton “Yogi” Sheridan). Shults was somehow able to hold onto the show dough. The mile went in 1:52.1.

The winner is a 7-year-old gelding trained by Symon Spicer and owned by Karen Taft and Anthony Verruso.

In the fourth race, it was an entirely different story. In a race on paper that showed a ton of speed, it was Machlicious (Jim King Solomon) who got the lead relatively easily and was able to walk through the first half-mile in :57. But the second half of the race told an entirely new script. With a back half of :55.3, it was the post time favorite El Yerno (Tony Beltrami) who made an early move before the half, but was never able to get to the top and faltered to fourth.

It did, however, tow a few of the closers into the race, but it was the pocket sitting ride by Sheridan, driving Majorly Sexy A, who took the victory by 5-1/2 lengths in 1:52.3. T Dog (Michael Kimelman) came from way back to garner the place money while Solomon faded to third.

Shane Tritton trains this winner, an 8-year-old gelding, for Team Tritton Inc. and Sheridan.

The ninth race provided action from the opening call, which saw Bionic (Shults) gunning to the front, where he likes to be, but through a swift :27 quarter. He didn’t slow the pace down through a half of :54.4 and this proved to be critical as it set up an exciting stretch duel between three horses.

In the end, it was Sunshine’s Finest (William Clark Jr.) who had to come off the cones and alter course and squeeze in between rivals to gain the top spot at double digit odds by a neck over another longshot, Hound On The Beach (Sheridan), while Warrawee Yankee (Mark Silva) rounded out the trifecta. This mile was the fastest of the night for the three MADC races, going in 1:51.4.

Clark co-owns the 8-year-old gelding with Mary Cuerbo and he is trained by Tom Shay.

The MADC will be back Saturday night for one trot and one pace on the card with the first post scheduled for 6:20 p.m.
