U.S. harness racing economic indicators for 2022 third quarter

Columbus, OH — Total wagering on U.S. harness races during the third quarter of 2022 from July 1 through Sept. 30 increased slightly by 0.61 percent with $396,589,531 bet this year compared to $394,175,658 during the same three months in 2021.

Purses during the third quarter showed a significant increase of 13.46 percent. From July through September, $188,262,300 was distributed in purses compared to $165,932,884 last year, an increase of $22,329,416.

Average wagering per race decreased by 2.42 percent from $39,167 to $38,218. Wagering per betting interest was also down slightly during the third quarter by 1.49 percent at $5,159 compared to $5,237 in 2021.

The number of race days increased by 17 (+1.44 percent) with 1,194 this year compared to 1,177 last year, while field size decreased slightly by 0.94 percent to 7.41 in 2022 compared to 7.48 in 2021.
