A group of riders participated in this past Sunday’s UMaine Standardbred Drill Team trail ride.

It was the first ever fund raising trail ride put on by the drill team. They will use the proceeds to help the Spirit of Hope Horse Refuge in Winterport with their winter needs of hay and grain for the horses they have taken in rescue.

The members of the drill team, including their President Rebecca Powers, wanted to choose a local rescue that takes in horses and could use the financial help.

For a $20 donation, riders could go on the 5.5-mile Trail Ride through the University of Maine Forest that started at the Witter Farm. Six people took part in this inaguaral ride.

Pledges were also sent in from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Ohio and Indiana to help out. More than $400 was raised, with pledges still coming in.

This is the first annual ride, and the drill team would like to make it a fall tradition, but they may sponsor another ride in the spring.
