Walter Mitchell Jr., 81, dies

Columbus, OH — Walter T. Mitchell Jr., 81, of Gordonville, Pa., formerly of Long Island, died July 4, 2024.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the son of the late Walter T. and Madeline (Ruff). He was the loving husband of Linda, with whom he would have celebrated 60 years of marriage in December.

Mr. Mitchell wore many hats in life and had a few nicknames — Walt, Mitch, Coach, Dibble, Dad, and Pop Pop.

He served 22 years as a police officer in Suffolk County, Long Island, from the age of 18 until his retirement from the force. He continued to work numerous jobs, eventually moving to Lancaster County. Most recently, he enjoyed helping transport his Amish neighbors/friends. The Esh family were a second family to him and Linda. Many special memories were made the last 15 years in Gordonville.

Of the Methodist Faith, Mr. Mitchell belonged to the Intercourse United Methodist Church. A great storyteller, he enjoyed sharing his stories with anyone who would lend him an ear.

He loved spending time with his family and cared greatly for children, whether his own or the children of others. He volunteered for the Wantagh Volunteer Fire Co. for 14 years. He coached Little League baseball for many years.

He had a passion for animals which included jogging horses at Roosevelt Raceway in New York.

Norton and Trixie were very special dogs in his life. They loved him right back and many others, especially when he brought treats.

In addition to his wife, Linda, he is survived by his children, Kim (Michael) Hill and Walter T. III (Jacqueline); grandchildren, Elizabeth (Bobby), Emily, Walter IV, Bridget, and Jack; great-grandchildren, Ruth, Edmond, and Arthur; and sister, Pat Wilcox.
