Wood County Fair completes racing program in the rain

by Bill Peters

Edgerton, OH — The Wood County Fair at Bowling Green, Ohio completed its two-day race program in the rain on Tuesday (Aug. 1). The rain caused the track condition to be downgraded from good to sloppy for the last two races.

The fastest pacing and trotting miles for the meet came on Tuesday before the rain moved in. Carl Atley’s Three Card (McArdle-Three Potato) toured the Bowling Green twice-around in 2:00.4 to capture the second division of the 3-year-old colt pace for the fair’s fastest pacing mile. Danny Dubeansky trains the colt with Duke Sugg picking up the winning drive.

Charming Cadet (Dejarmbro-Sasha Hall) stopped the timer at 2:04.4 to win the first division of the 3-year-old colt trot. That time was the quickest for any trotter at this year’s Wood County Fair. John Konesky III trains and drives the gelding and also co-owns him with his son Patrick.

David Lake was the fair’s leading driver with five trips to the winner’s circle. Chris Beaver, John Konesky III, and Steve Novak each had two training wins for the meet to pace that category.

Thanks to first-year Speed Superintendent Don Bechstein and his fellow speed committee members for putting on an excellent show. Also, thanks to several Wood County horsemen for helping out in various capacities. A special thanks goes out to Ruth Zernhel for helping out in the Speed Office and to Jerry Lighthill for working in the winner’s circle.

Harness racing resumes in the Ohio Fair Racing Conference with a one-day meet at the Cuyahoga County Fair at Berea on Tuesday (Aug. 8). Post time will be 12:30 p.m. That will be closely followed by two days of racing at the Attica Fair at Attica on Wednesday (Aug. 9) and Thursday (Aug. 10). Racing will get underway at 1 p.m. each day at Attica. Overlapping with the Attica Fair will be the Hartford Fair at Croton. They will race at Croton on Thursday (Aug. 10), Friday (Aug. 11), and Saturday (Aug. 12) with a 12 noon start each day.
