80-year-old Bob Sampson gets another driving win at Rosecroft

Ft Washington, MD — On Tuesday (March 14), 80-year-old trainer/driver Bob Sampson proved once again that age is just a number.

Sampson drove 7-year-old gelding Foxbriar Remark to victory in the ninth race at Rosecroft Raceway in 1:57.2. Sampson got a second over trip and tipped three-wide in the final turn to get up for the three-quarter length win. It was the 80-year old Sampson’s second driving win at Rosecroft in a week.

Exactly one week ago, Sampson, who celebrated his 80th birthday in February, won driving Foxbriar Remark’s 8-year-old brother Foxbriar Romeo to victory, also at Rosecroft.

Sampson’s first professional drive was back in 1961. Later that same year as a student at the University of Kentucky, Sampson would find himself helping out at Castleton Farm. While there he participated in harness racing, breaking the great Speedy Scot, who would go on to win the trotting Triple Crown in 1963. Since then, Sampson has trained and driven many horses over the years, while also doing side work in the steel industry.

Sampson currently operates a small racing stable based in Delaware. He shows no signs of slowing down, and is still focused on the future. He is currently training Foxbriar Romeo and Foxbriar Remark’s half-sister Foxbriar Ruthless, a 2-year-old Delaware bred pacing filly by No Spin Zone. He is aiming her for the Delaware stakes later this year.

When not training and driving horses, Sampson likes to spend time with his six great-grandchildren.
