American-bred Crepe Match wins Finnish Trotting Derby

Helsinki, Finland — The 2023 Finnish Trotting Derby, at the Vermo track, was won by Crepe Match with trainer/driver Olli Koivunen.

Crepe Match came from behind and, after being forced four-wide going around the last turn, won by a half length followed by Combo Corazon (Pekka Korpi) and Massimo Hoist (Mika Forss).

Crepe Match, who just raced for the 12th time in his career, picked up the winner’s purse of €120,000.

He is sired by Creatine and out of the Credit Winner mare Cameo Credit. In 2018, Cameo Credit was sold in Harrisburg for $14,000 while in foal to Creatine; that foal was Crepe Match.

On Sunday afternoon (Sept. 3), the Swedish Trotting Derby will be raced at Jägersro.

The only mare in the field, Joviality, with Erik Adielsson in the bike and trained by Sabine Kagebrant, is the favorite. Joviality, who is owned and bred by the powerful Courant Stable, was campaigned by Marcus Melander as 2- and 3-year-old in United States and was last year named 3-year-old Trotting Filly of the Year in the United States. As Swedish-registered, she is eligible to race in all big Swedish stakes races.
