Vernon, NY – Boiler Maker (Brad Irvine) charged late to steal the $8,500 Open Pace at Vernon Downs on Saturday (May 23).

Merrow (Chris Long) took the early lead but War Of Will (John MacDonald) was first to the quarter in :25.4. Natameri (Jimmy Whittemore) took control heading down the backstretch. Triple Sevens (Leon Bailey) then took his turn on the lead and led to the half in :54.4 and to three quarters in 1:22.3.
As they reached the stretch, Natameri popped out of the pocket and made his bid for the lead but Boiler Maker ($25.06) came flying three-wide and just nipped second-place finisher Triple Sevens to win by a quarter of a length in 1:51.3.
Boiler Maker is an 8-year-old gelding by Sweet Lou. He is owned and trained by Laura Shock. It was his third win of the season and his 33rd career victory.
Leon Bailey had a driving grand slam. David Dewhurst had a training triple. Chris Long had a driving double.
Vernon Downs returns to live racing on Memorial Day Monday (May 25) with a post time of 12:15 p.m.
