Lexington, KY — On Tuesday (Sept. 16), the Red Mile hosted eight $50,000 Kentucky Golden Rod Series finals. The red clay oval was not kind to the public’s top selections as only two managed to make it to the winner’s circle. It was, however, a great day for the wagering public, led by 72-1 long shot Boots N Beer.
Boots N Beer, Misspanzee spring upsets in 3-year-old trots
At odds of 72-1, Boots N Beer set a new lifetime mark of 1:51.2 in the sophomore male trot final. Owned, trained and driven by Joey Putnam, the son of Greenshoe-Urban Legend is 26-5-7-5 and has earned $81,635.
The gelding was bred by Kentuckiana Farms and Perry Soderberg. He was third in the $50,000 Kentucky Proud Series Final to kick off this meet.
Boots N Beer paid a hefty $147.74 to win.
Misspanzee (Andy Miller) had more support than her male counterpart, but the daughter of Gimpanzee-Miss Trixton was a bit overlooked at 17-1. The filly crossed the line in a lifetime best 1:52.1 and led a sweep of the exacta for trainer Noel Daley, who also harnessed runner-up Caviart Ivy (Niko Kärnä).
Bred by Order By Stable AB, Misspanzee’s resume is 16-6-2-2, and she has earned $69,900 for owner Thaddeus Weir. Shepaid a generous $37.88 to win.
Baret, Blue Onyx score in sophomore pacing finals
Favored Baret (Andy McCarthy) extended her win streak to three for trainer Brett Pelling in 1:50.1. The daughter of Bettor’s Delight-Sail By, bred by Britany Farms, is 20-6-6-1 and has earned $128,263 for owner Diamond Creek Racing.
She paid $2.98.
Blue Onyx (Yannick Gingras) returned to the winner’s circle after a recent ownership change and is now a member of the Burke Brigade. The son of Tall Dark Stranger-Brooklyn Lilacs stopped the clock in 1:50.3 to win by a nose.
Bred by Crawford Farms Racing, the colt was previously trained by Tony Alagna and owned by Pryde & Alagna Stable, Bradley Grant, his breeder and William Beattie. He is now owned by Burke Racing Stable, Bradley Grant and Weaver Bruscemi.
His record stands at 23-4-2-4 with a bankroll of $107,735.
Blue Onyx paid $14.46 to win.
Out The Window, Captain Naughty claim titles in freshman trotting events
Third choice Out The Window (Andy McCarthy) made it three in a row and three-for-six overall with a lifetime-best 1:54.2 triumph in final for fillies.
Trained by Carter Pinske, the daughter of Googoo Gaagaa-Sherry Lyns Lady is owned by her conditioner and Andray Farm.
Out The Window was bred by Coyote Wynd Farms and paid $9.40 to win.
The filly has earned $40,000.
Captain Naughty rebounded off a seventh-place finish in the final leg of the series to win his final with a new speed badge of 1:53.3. The son of Captain Corey-Msnaughtyashill is trained by Justin Lloyd and was guided by Tim Tetrick.
The colt competes as a homebred for Denise Dennis, his record is 7-4-1-0, and he has amassed $61,250.
As the third choice, Captain Naughty paid $11.50 to win.
Down The Line, Seaside Charm are victorious in 2-year-old pacing events
Travis Alexander trainee Down The Line established a new lifetime mark of 1:51.3 in the final for freshman male pacers. The son of Captain Crunch-Bet Online was steered by Tetrick.
Owned and bred by Fiddler’s Creek Stables, Down The Line improved his record to 7-3-0-2 and boosted his bankroll to $48,840. He paid $30.58 to win.
Favored Seaside Charm collected her third consecutive win with a new speed badge of 1:50.4 in the contest for 2-year-old filly pacers in line to Gingras. The daughter of Downbytheseaside-Summer Charm is trained by Ron Burke.
Owned by Thomas and Scott Dillon, the filly was bred by Brookside Stables and Amos Lengacher.
Seaside Charm possesses a resume of 6-4-0-0 and has earned more than $40,000.
She paid $2.70 to win.
