Owner enjoys another ‘Ideal’ horse
Forty years ago, Don Van Witzenburg had an Illinois-bred pacer named Iones Folly, who earned more than $400,000 lifetime. His trainer at the time told Van Witzenburg he could live a lifetime and never find another horse like him. Van Witzenburg points out it proved to be an incorrect assumption. “I’m 86 years old and I found another one just like him,” Van Witzenburg said, laughing. The “another one” is Ideal Jimmy, who is now enjoying success in the George Morton Levy Memorial Pacing Series at Yonkers Raceway.

Declan Seelster improving heading into Sagamore Hill final
Glenn Goller watched with interest as Declan Seelster’s career began in the Ontario Sire Stakes at Mohawk. The Big Jim son turned heads with a 1:51.4 victory on debut Aug. 19, 2017 and followed the effort with several other big miles, leading the David Menary trainee to earn a place in the OSS Super Final. However, the talented pacer finished up the track in that start and failed to make an impression as a 3-year-old.

Paul McCune, 59, dies
Equine veterinarian Paul E. McCune, D.V.M., of Cedar Lake, Ind., passed away peacefully at home on Sunday (March 24). He was 59.
