Cool Papa Bell, Instagram Model win qualifiers at Big M

East Rutherford, NJ — Returning Dan Patch Award-recipient Cool Papa Bell and 2022 Jim Doherty Memorial champion Instagram Model were among the winners in Friday’s (May 5) 13 qualifiers at The Meadowlands.

Cool Papa Bell, qualifying for the second time this year, stopped the clock in 1:54.2 for driver Todd McCarthy and trainer Jim Campbell. The 4-year-old male trotter was timed in 1:55 in his previous qualifier, which was April 15 at The Meadowlands.

Slay, last year’s Canadian Trotting Classic winner making his qualifying debut, finished second behind Cool Papa Bell, beaten a length in 1:54.3.

Campbell also sent out 3-year-old male trotter Wild Bill Kelso for his second qualifying trip. Wild Bill Kelso and driver Scott Zeron won by a nose over Tillio’s Action in 1:53.2.

Instagram Model, a 3-year-old female trotter, made her first appearance of the year and won in 1:53.1 for driver Zeron and trainer Annie Stoebe.

Stoebe also saw 4-year-old female trotter Champagne Hanover post a victory in her qualifying bow, winning by a nose over Una Madonna in 1:55.2 with Andy McCarthy in the sulky. She had raced eight times earlier this year, the last on March 31.
