Nichols, NY — The long-running tradition of dachshund racing is returning to Tioga Downs Casino Resort this Labor Day, giving guests a chance to enjoy an afternoon of fun, furry competition during the 10 Standardbred races that are on tap. Post time for live harness racing is 12:30 p.m.
The dachshund races will take place Monday, Sept. 7, as part of Tioga Downs’ Labor Day festivities, with 28 dogs set to compete in the popular annual racing event.
“Our dog races have become a favorite tradition among our guests at Tioga Downs, many of whom look forward to coming back each year for this event,” said Andrew Demsky, regional director of racing for Tioga and Vernon Downs.
The dog races will be contested at a distance of approximately 60 feet. The initial heats will take place after races 2, 3 and 4 with the championship heat following race 5.
All eyes will be on Bentley, a 5-year-old brown wiener dog owned and trained by Emily Krise.
Bentley has won this event for an unprecedented four straight years and returns once again seeking to defend his title.
“These races are all about fun — there’s no wagering involved. It’s just a chance for our guests to sit back, cheer on the dogs and enjoy some good-natured entertainment,” Demsky said.
Other promotions include a $1 hot dog special at Trackside Concessions, as well as the annual Horse Play car giveaway contest offering guests the opportunity to qualify to win a new 2025 Toyota Tacoma.
Labor Day also marks the final race day in which the free trackside waterslide is open as area children get set to go back to school.
