Western Terror (1) with John Campbell and stablemate Timesareachanging with Ron Pierce pass the finish line side by side in the Cane Pace, which was ruled a dead heat between the two horses.
In the first dead heat in the history of the race, stablemates Timesareachanging (Ron Pierce) and Western Terror (John Campbell) crossed the finish line together in the $334,875 final, alone at the wire in a time of 1:52.3. The duo is owned by Perfect World Enterprises and trained by Brett Pelling.
Camelot Hall, winner of last week’s elimination race for the Cane, was off the gate first from post two, with George Brennan steering him in to the lead on the outside by the :27 quarter. Timeareachanging quickly overtook him on the inside, and Camelot Hall fell in behind, still in that spot at the :56 half.
Western Terror started working his way to the front of the pack from fifth in the first stretch, and was second in behind Timesareachanging by the 1:24.4 three quarters, with Harry Hornet third, outside of Camelot Hall in fourth.
When the field turned for home, John Campbell tipped Western Terror off the rail to make a try for the lead. The two could not be separated at the wire, but left the third place finisher, Mantacular (Cat Manzi) five and three-quarters lengths behind. Holborn Hanover (Luc Ouellette) was fourth and Harry Hornet (George Brennan) was fifth. Camelot Hall was twelve lengths back in seventh place.
“I decided to go after Camelot Hall early rather than bide my time,” said Ron Pierce, who drove Timesareachanging. “I attacked early. He didn’t look like himself. If he had looked stronger, I’d have stayed in behind. I guess Camelot Hall wasn’t himself and we got a good trip.”
“The way I look at it, I’ve got two horses eligible to the Triple Crown” said trainer Brett Pelling, who indicated he would send both horses to the next leg of the Triple Crown, the Messenger Stake at Harrington (DE) Raceway on September 14. “He’s a very nice horse, but he can’t make his own luck, ” Pelling said of Western Terror. The Little Brown Jug, on September 23 at the Delaware (Ohio), is the third and final leg of the Pacing Triple Crown.
