Grove City, OH – A total of $140,000 was up for grabs as the Delaware County Fair hosted the fifth leg of the Buckeye Stallion Series for filly trotters on the second of its five-day meet in Delaware, Ohio, on Monday (Sept. 15). The 19-race card featured three $20,000 divisions of sophomore filly trotters and four $20,000 divisions of freshman filly trotters.
Pretty Lil Penny (Trevor Smith) won the first division of 3-year-old filly trotters by a length and a half in 1:56.3 for trainer Jeremy Miller. Long Toms Treasure (Jason Beattie) was second followed by Sweet Rose’ (Chris Lems) in third. Pretty Lil Penny was in fifth place as Sweet Rose’ led at the first two calls with fractions of :28.3 and :57.3. The Marseille filly made it three wide and moved into the lead on the outside of Sweet Rose’ at the three-quarter mark in 1:27.2 en route to the victory. It was her second straight BSS victory, joining her win in the fourth leg in 1:56.1. She has five career wins with $64,438 in earnings and is owned by Miller and Wayne Mast Jr.
“It was a very nice effort. They made some last-minute changes on her before she went to the gate, and she dug in and beat a really nice filly,” Mast Jr. said in a post-race interview with the Ohio Harness Horsemen’s Association. “I have a really good group of trainers. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”
Pretty Lil Penny entered Monday tied for eighth in the BSS standings, making the victory an important one toward qualifying for the final.
“We were hoping for this kind of result, as we really needed a win here to get us in there (the finals),” Mast Jr., said.
In a photo finish, Sienna Sunrise (Kurt Sugg) edged Up (Lems) by a nose to win the second division in a lifetime-best 1:56.2. Aunt Lilly (Anthony MacDonald) was just a fifth of a second back in third. Up was the leader at each of the first three calls with fractions of :28.1, :57.3, and 1:26.3. Sienna Sunrise was a length back in second place entering the final stretch before using a late burst on the outside to take the narrow victory. The Michael Lee trainee his six lifetime wins and $95,960 in earnings. The Enterprise filly is owned by James Beluscak, Lee, Robert Carson, and Jill Dentel.
Volstarita (Justin Irvine) earned a second straight BSS victory, winning the third division in 1:55.1. The Cassandra Lecourt trainee was a winner in the fourth leg in 1:56.3 and has seven career victories. Youthful Kemp (Chris Page) led at the first two calls with fractions of :28.1 and :57.4 before Volstarita went in front. The Volstead filly led the field past the three-quarter mark in 1:26.4 en route to winning by three lengths over Youthful Kemp and Countn On Cc (Mike Wilder) in third. Volstarita has seven career wins and $75,473 in earnings and is owned by M3 Racing Stable.
Freshman Filly Trotters
Ranger Rosie (Tyler Angus), a 72-1 longshot, won the first division by a head in a lifetime-best 1:57.4. It was the second career win for the In Range filly, who entered with a lifetime mark of 2:11.1. She paid $146.80 to win. Hill Of A Diva (Page) led at each of the first three calls with fractions of :29.2, :59, and 1:28.2. Ranger Rosie was in fourth place and three lengths back of the leader at the three-quarter pole but used a strong close in the passing lane down the stretch to edge Hill Of A Diva at the line. Til The End As (Dan Noble) was third. Ranger Rosie is trained by Miles Wollam for owner Robert Kline. She has $14,345 in career earnings.
Driven by trainer Sandy Beatty, Readi Two edged Hangtighthoney L (Hank LeVan) by a half-length at the line to win the second division in a lifetime-best 1:57.4. Hill On Heels (Tyler Smith) was third. It was the second BSS win of the season for the Ready For Moni filly, who also took a division in the third leg in 1:58. Hangtighthoney L was the leader past the first three calls with fractions of :28.4, :59.3, and 1:29.1. Readi Two moved second over going to the half and continued following cover to the three-quarters. She made it three wide as Mockingbird As (Noble) went off stride entering the final stretch and chased down Hangtighthoney L on the outside to take the win. Readi Two has hit the board in all seven seasonal starts with five wins and two seconds. She has $37,447 in earnings and is owned by Robert Sharrits.
Wild As Her As (Noble) notched her second BSS win of the season, taking the third division in 1:58.1. The Enterprise filly took the pocket trip behind Lacy Lucy (Austin Hanners) through the first three calls with fractions of :29, :59.4, and 1:29.1. Wild As Her As moved to the outside down the final stretch and pulled away to win by a length over Lacy Lucy. Dublins Breanna (Ronnie Wrenn Jr.) was third. Trained by Anette Lorentzon, Wild As Her As also took a division in the third leg of the BSS, winning in 1:57.4. She is owned by ACL Stuteri AB and has $21,600 in lifetime earnings.
Chip Shot (Wrenn Jr.) put forth a dominant effort in winning the fourth division by 10 lengths in a lifetime-best 1:56. That marked the second straight BSS win for the Vernon Beachy trainee, as the Mission Accepted filly scored a victory in the fourth leg in 1:58.2. Off The Rails (Tr. Smith) led at the quarter pole in :28, but it was Chip Shot out in front the rest of the way with fractions of :56.4 and 1:26.1. Chip Shot stretched a two-length lead at the three-quarter pole to seven lengths entering the final stretch en route to the victory. She has hit the board in five of eight starts this season with four wins and one second and has $28,478 in earnings. She is owned by John Schlabach and Walnut View Farm.
In Other Action
Ready For Moni fillies Charlies Moni and Tango L took two of the four divisions of the Ohio Fair Racing Conference for 2-year-old filly trotters.
Charlies Moni (Lems) recorded the fastest mile among the four divisions, going wire-to-wire to win the third division by three lengths in 1:56.4. It was the first career win in seven starts for the Ready For Moni filly. She is trained by Beachy.
Tango L, with LeVan as driver-trainer, won the first division by more than 10 lengths in a lifetime-best 1:59.1. Her previous lifetime mark was 2:04.4. She has hit the board in 13 of 17 seasonal starts with five victories.
After leaving from the far outside, Princess Karolyn (Sam Widger) won the second division in wire-to-wire fashion, finishing in 1:58.3. The Creatine filly has hit the board in five of 10 seasonal starts with three wins and is trained by Rosy Weaver.
Man I’m Sassy (Emanuel Miller) took the fourth division by a head in a lifetime-best 2:01.3. The Herman Hagerman trainee had a previous best mark of 2:05.4. The Long Tom filly has five wins in 13 seasonal starts.
I Bee Cream (Brady Clemens) won the first of two OFRC divisions for 3-year-old filly trotters, taking the victory by five lengths in a lifetime-best 1:56.4. The De La Creme filly is trained by Charles Vigneron. She has 15 wins and $66,644 in earnings in 34 lifetime starts.
In the second division, Strike A Pose (Page) finished second but was placed first after Strawberry Hill (Hanners) was placed third for interference. Bank It (Ronnie Gillespie) finished third but was placed second. Strike A Pose tripped the wire in 1:59.3. The Muscle Up The Goal filly is trained by Rory Moore.
The five-day Delaware County Fair meet continues Tuesday (Sept. 16) with a 15-race card starting at 1 p.m. The card includes seven $20,000 divisions of the fifth leg of the BSS – three divisions for sophomore colt trotters and four divisions for freshman colt trotters.
