Delaware, OH — The Delaware (Ohio) County Fair hosted three $20,000 fifth-leg divisions of the Buckeye Stallion Series for 2-year-old male pacers as part of a 21-race card on Wednesday (Sept. 23).
On Fire (Tyler Smith) recorded the fastest mile of the three races, winning the first division in a lifetime best 1:55.4. The Catch The Fire gelding led by 1-1/4 lengths at the halfway mark and stretched the advantage to 4-1/4 lengths at the wire. Im A Fire Truck (Atlee Bender) and Mental Up (Kurt Sugg) rounded out the top three.
On Fire is trained by Micah Miller for owner Jeremy Miller. He has three wins and two seconds in five seasonal starts, banking $26,886.
Passing Gear scored his third BSS win of the season, taking the second division in 1:59.3 with trainer Kayne Kauffman in the sulky for owners Redline Racing Stables, Redracer, David Van Dusen, and Daniel Schrock. The Downbytheseaside gelding led gate to wire, recording fractions of :29.1, :59.4 and 1:29.3 en route to a 4-length victory. Declamation (Chris Page) was second followed by Crownasaurus (Jeff Nisonger) in third.
Passing Gear has four wins and $47,725 in earnings in seven seasonal starts.
In the third division, trainer Mike Micallef drove Stateroom to his first career victory in seven starts. The Downbytheseaside gelding won in gate-to-wire fashion with fractions of :27, :56.3 and 1:26.2 before crossing the finish line in 1:56.3. Ati Booze Cruisin (David Miller) was three-quarters of a length back in second followed by Livingood Hanover (Brett Miller) in third.
Stateroom is owned by Bet The House LLC and has $39,250 in earnings.
The five-day Delaware County Fair meet concludes Thursday (Sept. 24) with a 19-race card starting at 11 a.m. The card is highlighted by the $550,000 Little Brown Jug and also includes the fifth leg of the BSS for sophomore pacers. Catch all the racing coverage on the OHHA YouTube channel.
