Vernon, NY – Dewey Arnold and driver Leon Bailey won the $8,500 Open Trot at Vernon Downs on Saturday (June 6).

Dewey Arnold charged out of the gate and went straight to the front, gliding to the quarter in :27.4. He used a :29.1 second quarter to cruise to the half in :57 and was strong to three-quarters in 1:25.
As the field reached the stretch, second-place finisher Special Mission (driver Dan Daley) went all out after the leader, but no one was getting to Dewey Arnold as he scored in 1:54. Bella Cavalla (John MacDonald) finished third.
Dewey Arnold is an 8-year-old gelding by Deweycheatumnhowe. He is owned by Philip Hale and trainer David Dewhurst. He has four wins in 2026, 46 wins lifetime, and paid $3.24 for the victory.
Truman Gale and Jimmy Whittemore had driving hat tricks. Wayne Bouck had a training double.
Vernon Downs returns to live racing on Friday (June 12), featuring the Empire Breeders Classic for sophomore filly trotters as well as 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters. Post time is 12:15 p.m. (EDT).
