A spectacular day of racing is in store Sunday afternoon (Oct. 11) at Vinovo Racecourse outside Turin, Italy. The program features not only the two biggest races for Italian 3-year-olds — the Derby Italiano and the Oaks del Trotto — but also the two leading international events under the UET banner: the Grand Prix de l’UET for 4-year-olds and the UET Elite Circuit Final for older stars.
It has been many years since an Italian harness racing track hosted such an impressive card featuring international stars.
Together, the four major races offer total purses of €1,953,800 (approximately $2.2 million). The Derby del Trotto carries the richest purse at €800,800 (approximately $900,000), with €334,800 (approximately $375,000) going to the winner.
Italy’s leading trainer, Alessandro Gocciadoro, has won the race five times and will start four horses, including two of the favorites: Il Trio Jet (Wishing Stone) and Ideal Turdance (El Ideal).
In the UET Grand Prix, which offers a €200,000 (approximately $224,000) first prize, German Derby winner Fragolino Rosso (Booster Winner) is the favorite. The horse has reeled off win after win — not only in Germany, but also in starts in Sweden and France, as well as in the Netherlands, where Paul Hagoort trains him.
Gocciadoro has a strong challenger here in Guglielmo Jet (Maharajah).
Three 10-year-old horses are in the field for the UET Grand Circuit Final, which offers a €250,000 (approximately $280,000) first prize. But age has not slowed them down: France’s Go On Boy, driven by Romain Derieux, and Sweden’s Don Fanucci Zet, driven by Örjan Kihlström, are in fact two of the favorites.
