Topsham, ME – McGwire Sowers held the hot hand on a steamy late summer Sunday afternoon (Aug. 9), scoring four driving wins over the course of Topsham Fair’s well attended opening day card.
Sowers flashed with flair on Sunday, teaming a pair of winners home from his wife, Autym’s, well-stocked roster; first with Smartys Filly (1:58.2, $3.20), who broke an 0-for-26 streak while cruising through a :58.1 back-half en route to a 15-1/2-length margin at the wire, and then with McLatte (2:00.3, $41.60), who rode a more pedestrian gate-to-wire path to nab her third win of the season.
Catch-driving proved equally profitable for Sowers on Sunday too. He was able overcome a tempo-deadening 1:03.1 opening half shrewdly thrown by To My Credit (Alex MacDonald) to rally at the wire with the Rex Ellis-trained Dusty Lane Darby (2:04, $3.80), before closing out his grand slam day with an in-hand power march behind the class-dropping Vel Trust In Time (1:56.1, $2.40), while claiming the fastest win of the day in the process.
Racing will continue throughout the week at Topsham with free admission featured for the pre-fair card on Monday (Aug. 10) while post time on Wednesday (Aug. 12) will be at 1 p.m. (EDT). Wednesday is senior citizen’s day with admission for those 60-and-over reduced to $5 for the day.
Post time for Thursday’s (Aug. 13) card will be at 3 p.m. while Saturday’s (Aug. 15) grand finale will head to post at 1 p.m.
