Garrett James Whelan, 43, dies

Columbus, OH — Garrett James Whelan, 43, died after a courageous battle with cancer on Oct. 5, 2023, at Sunnybrook Health Center.

He was the beloved husband and best friend of Lindsey; loving father of Connell; dear son of Dechia and Jim (Angela); and devoted brother of Justin (Erin), Brett (Allison), Abi (Steven), and Marshall (Judy). He will be lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews, Natalie, Liam, North and Ariat. He will be sadly missed by his in-laws, Glenn and Diana, as well as his brother-in-law Steven. He was the cherished grandson of Ira and Pricilla and the late Basil and Lillian. He will also be missed and remembered by his aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Mr. Whelan was adventurous and loved life. He especially enjoyed spending time at home in Bracebridge and on the water in Muskoka with Lindsey and their faithful dog, Baron.

Fiercely protective of his loved ones and always willing to lend a hand or a compassionate ear to people he encountered, he was adored and respected by more people than could be counted. He was the type of man who always made such a difference in the lives of those around him and put others first.

He enjoyed visiting Prince Edward Island to spend time with his extended family. His love for gardening was reflected in his ability to nurture and grow beauty from the simplest of spaces. He was a strong and passionate handyman, always at work around his home in Bracebridge or his parent’s farm in Troy.

Sports were his escape and his passion. Whether it was cheering for his favorite hockey team or bonding with friends over a game of golf, he always enjoyed the camaraderie.

The family would like to thank his medical team, led by Dr. James Perry, and the medical staff at Sunnybrook Health Center for their kind and compassionate care.

In honor of his wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to Gord Downie Fund for Brain Cancer Research through Sunnybrook Health Center.
