Highland Mowgli too tough in Dover trot

Dover, DE — Highland Mowgli lived up to odds-on billing in Tuesday’s (Jan. 31) $19,000 Winners Over/Select Handicap Trot at Bally’s Dover, turning in a punishing 4-1/4-length win over good going.

Ross Wolfenden left alertly with Highland Mowgli from mid-pack and forced outside leavers GingerTree Skyr and Quiksilvr Bluechip to take seats behind him through a :28 first quarter. Skyway Bebop braved a quarter-pole move out of fifth, but was unsuccessful and found himself parked through a :56.2 half before fading up the backstretch.

Muscle Dynasty launched a three-wide blitz around a tiring Skyway Bebop up the backstretch and worked into third through the 1:24.4 three-quarters, but proved no match for Highland Mowgli, who drew off at will in the stretch and won in 1:53.4.

Highland Mowgli, a 5-year-old Archangel gelding trained by Ron Burke for the Burke Racing Stable and Weaver Bruscemi, paid $2.60 to win.

Ross Wolfenden scored three driving wins on the card.
