Windsor, ME — Ikon Vang DK made his Maine debut a winning one at the Windsor Fair on Friday (Sept. 4), scoring at first asking for new connections and earning top honors in the $6,000 open-level trot at the mid-Maine agricultural exhibition.
Ably piloted by driver Heath Campbell, Ikon Vang DK left the gate in complete lockstep with Deadline Hall (McGwire Sowers), briefly dueling for the early lead before quickly acquiescing to the comfort of the pocket seat. Tracking a deviously-sneaky pace which deadened from a :29.4 opening quarter to a 1:01.3 half, the tandem then sped through an accelerated :58.1 back-half before a mighty :28.1 final quarter enabled the Danish-bred trotter to nail his well-heeled rival by a neck at the wire.
The mile, timed in 1:59.4, represented the 8th win of the season for the 6-year-old son of Southwind Frank, who is now trained by James Dunn for owner Diane Dunn.
Deadline Hall finished a game second while Dryden Hanover (Aaron Hall) completed the trifecta.
Harness racing continues throughout the holiday weekend at the Windsor Fair with post times for Saturday, Sunday, and Monday set for 1:00 p.m. (EDT).
Saturday’s card (Sept. 5), is headlined by the $15,000 renewal of the Windsor Fair Invitational, which this year features the much anticipated matchup between the two fastest Maine-bred pacers of all time, So Rock N’ Roll (Kevin Switzer, Jr.) and Two Fold Cold (Bruce Ranger), who both brag lifetime marks of 1:48.2 taken recently at Plainridge Racecourse.
Two Fold Cold, fresh off a 1:53.1 victory in the Skowhegan State Fair Invitational, has been installed as the 2-1 morning line favorite. Contenders will include Alex Having Fun (Aaron Hall), who marked earlier this season in 1:48.3 at Plainridge; Tenzing Bromac N (Ron Cushing), last year’s defending Windsor Fair Invitational champion; Vel Letsroll South (McGwire Sowers), who has finished a close second to Two Fold Cold and Instant Replay respectively, in each of his last two appearances: and the aforementioned So Rock N’ Roll.
The $15,000 Windsor Fair Invitational is slated for race nine on Saturday which is scheduled to go to post at 3:40 pm.
