One of French trotting’s great horses, Jag de Bellouet, known as “Le Cannibal” during his racing career, has passed away at the age of 28.

Jag de Bellouet, who gave the owner’s son Christophe Gallier his big breakthrough as a trainer and driver, was a top horse in both sulky and under-saddle races, winning no fewer than 12 Group 1 races.
The world’s largest under-saddle race, the Prix de Cornulier, was won by Jag de Bellouet with Matthieu Abrivard in the saddle three times in a row.
Jag de Bellouet won the Prix d’Amérique in 2005 and was also first over the finish line in 2006, but was subsequently disqualified in a doping case that turned out to be contamination from feed. In the same year, Jag de Bellouet was also first over the finish line in Elitloppet, but was again disqualified due to a doping case.
Jag de Bellouet also won the Prix de France, Prix de Paris, Prix Henri Balliere, Prix de l’Atlantique, and in Finland, the Kymi Grand Prix.
In total, he had 115 starts and 36 wins, earning 4,223,699 Euros, with his best time being 1:52.2 (mile rate).
At stud, Jag de Bellouet’s best offspring is the mare Granville Bleu, currently one of France’s best under-saddle horses. He is also the sire of Tornado Bello, who earned 1 million Euros and is now the sire of, among others, the talented Iroise de La Noe, who won the Prix de Belgique.
