Hamburg, NY – It was a perfect scenario for Lyons Surfing as a drenching rain and sloppy racetrack allowed him to “hang ten” on the field in Buffalo Raceway’s $15,500 Open Pace on Saturday afternoon (May 16). He beat a pesky Mach Le More A by three-quarters of a length in 1:57.4 while Bet On Buter was third.
A two-week break after finishing fourth and eighth proved to be the answer as well for Lyons Surfing. He had a five-race winning streak, but the two dull appearances earned him a nice respite, and he returned refreshed and ready to go.
The early going saw Bet On Buter (driven by Keith Kash Jr.) roll out to the early advantage and collect fractions of :28.3, :58 and 1:28. Lyons Surfing in the meanwhile was sitting fourth approaching the opening half and began his steady progression on the outside toward the lead.

Bet On Buter and Lyons Surfing were on even terms turning for home with the long stretch to determine the outcome. But the surf was up for Lyons Surfing (Ray Fisher Jr.) down the stretch, and he was able to splash his way to the victory over Mach Le More A (Kevin Cummings) while Bet On Buter tailed off in the end but finished in third.
Owned by the P T Stable and trained by Sheena Cohen, Lyons Surfing, a 6-year-old son of Stay Hungry-Surfside Sexy, has won six times in nine appearances in 2026. The win jumped his seasonal earnings to $42,865 and to $443,917 in his career. He paid $5.40 to win.
In the co-featured $15,500 Open Trot, El Toro Loco stayed as clean as possible with a front-running three-quarter length victory over Crazy Ritz in 1:59.2.
Racing right to the lead for Kevin Cummings, El Toro Loco didn’t catch any spray as he posted consistent splits of :30.1, 1:00.1 and 1:30 as Crazy Ritz (James McNeight Jr.) sat patiently in the perfect pocket position.
As the field turned for the wire, El Toro Loco was able to keep Crazy Ritz at bay and take the victory. Shine All The Way (David McNeight III) was four lengths back to collecting the show position.
Owned by Michael Torcello and trained by Samuel Smith, it was the third win in eight outings for El Toro Loco (Walner-Southwind Cabaret). The victory increased his 2026 earnings to $29,650 and to $345,079 lifetime. He paid $3.46 to win.
Brett MacDonald had four wins on the day with James McNeight Jr. snagging two. Chris Petrelli and Cohen produced two training wins apiece.
Racing will resume on Wednesday afternoon (May 20) at 2:30 p.m. (EDT) with a 13-race program scheduled.
