Mares could dominate world’s richest under saddle race

The Prix de Cornulier to be raced at Vincennes, Paris, France Sunday afternoon (Jan. 22) with a purse of 700.000 Euro is the world’s richest under saddle race.

Six of the last 10 editions of the race have been won by mares and last year, four of the first five finisher were mares.

In this year’s race, 12 of the 18 entrants are mares and the likely favorite is last year’s winner Flamme du Goutier with Matthieu Mottier. But another mare, Fantaisie with Francois Lagadeuc should also take substantial money at the windows.

The distance is 2.700 meters, approximately 1 and 11/16 miles, the same distance as the world’s toughest sulky race, the Prix d’Amerique to be raced Sunday, Jan. 29.

The race record in the Prix de Cornulier is 1.54.3 (mile rate).

If Flamme du Goutier wins again, she will be only the third mare in race history to win in two consecutive years.
